While the University of Hong Kong is celebrating over a century of history, it is also boldly forging a path towards the future. The Pokfield Campus is a key facet of the University’s pioneering development plans. This issue features the design aspirations of Pokfield Campus, an overview of Phase 1 development and updates on community engagement and construction works.
Design Aspirations
The design of the Pokfield Campus embraces innovation and sustainability, and supports mental and physical well-being. It is guided by eight major design aspirations, which are integrated into the overall concept and create a forward-looking, smart and sustainable campus.
Overview: Pokfield Campus Phase 1
The Pokfield Campus aims to create a multifaceted community for education, culture and sports. Phase 1 comprises two buildings, namely an academic complex that will house HKU’s Business School, as well as a multi-purpose sports complex that will provide world-class sports and recreation facilities.
Academic Complex, HKU Business School
Located at the junction of Pokfulam Road and Pokfield Road, the new iconic Academic Complex will cover a net floor area of more than 19,000 square metres spreading across nine storeys, including five levels below ground. It will offer ample research and communal space that facilitates collaboration and outreach.
Multi-purpose Sports Complex
The Sports Complex will receive a major face-lift into a dynamic space where students and staff can pursue wellness of the mind and body. Located at the south-western tip of the Pokfield Campus and covering a net floor area of 5,000 square metres, the ultra-modern four-storey Sports Complex will provide world class facilities for both indoor and outdoor sports.
Amenities include HKU’s first Olympic standard indoor swimming pool with adjustable depth; Indoor sports hall with LED flooring system that can switch between different sports; Rooftop basketball court and jogging trail.
Community Engagement
The Pokfield Campus Development presents an opportunity to uplift the community’s environment. HKU is dedicated to creating a new campus at Pokfield Road that facilitates improvement in the accessibility of the district, and engaged the community through conducting an online survey and community workshop in April 2022.
A report of the views collected has been compiled and shared with relevant government departments for consideration in improving pedestrian connectivity in the district. HKU will consider the feasibility of the feedback and incorporate in the design of the Pokfield Campus where appropriate.
Construction Progress
The statutory town planning procedures relating to the Pokfield Campus Development have been completed and received approval from the Town Planning Board in December 2021 and May 2022. The demolition of Pokfield Road Residences and site formation has been completed, while other works are in progress, including underground utilities diversion and excavation for the construction of vehicle entrances.
