A farewell ceremony was held at the Flora Ho Sports Centre (FHSC) of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) today (January 8). HKU students, alumni and staff gathered to bid farewell to the sports centre – a place full of cherished memories of the HKU family. The FHSC will soon be transformed into part of the University’s new Pokfield Campus.
The farewell ceremony was attended by HKU President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Xiang Zhang, and Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Richard Wong, Chairman of the Project Group for the Capital Development Complex at the Pokfield Road Site.
The HKU community expressed gratitude for the dedicated support from the late Dr. Stanley Ho and the Ho Family to the University, especially its sports development including the building of FHSC and the Stanley Ho Sports Centre, and sports activities benefitting generations of students.
The FHSC carries precious collective memories of HKU students. It was opened in 1984, serving as a venue for various sports activities and competitions, and occasionally as an examination centre for students. Mr. Yeung Tak-keung, HKU alumnus and former Commissioner for Sports, recalled that he was awarded the Best Athlete of the University in 1984, and the award ceremony was the first official event held at the FHSC.
“As one chapter closes, another begins,” Professor Wong shared in his speech that the upcoming Pokfield Campus will be equipped with contemporary facilities that meet the standards of a 21st century university and cater to the needs of the HKU community.
“What we have planned for this site we are standing on is the University’s new Pokfield Campus, which will include an iconic academic complex that will be home to the HKU Business School, a residence for staff and visiting scholars, and an innovative teaching and learning hub with conference facilities, and – of course — an ultra-modern multipurpose sports complex,” said Professor Wong. He added that the brand-new sports complex will have a depth-adjustable indoor heated swimming pool and a range of function rooms for various sports activities.
